Automated phone menus are designed to keep you in self-service. These steps reliably get you to a live agent faster.
Quick answer: Say “agent” or press 0 at every phone prompt, skip the narrow menu options, and accept a call-back if offered — that combination reaches a live airline agent fastest.
1. Use the magic words
At every prompt, say “agent” or “representative” clearly, or press 0. Most airline systems escalate to a human after you repeat this two or three times, or when voice recognition fails. Don’t answer the system’s questions in detail — vague, repeated requests for a person work best.
2. Don’t over-specify in the menu
Choosing a narrow sub-menu (“baggage” then “delayed” then “domestic”) often drops you into a smaller, busier queue. A general “reservations” or “existing booking” path usually reaches a general agent sooner.
3. Always accept the call-back
If the airline offers an automated call-back, take it. You keep your place in line without holding, and the airline calls you when an agent is free. It is the single biggest time-saver on this list.
4. Time your call well
Call in the first hour after the line opens, and mid-week — Tuesday to Thursday are calmest. The worst times are Monday mornings, weekends, and the 24–48 hours after major storms or system outages, when call volume spikes.
5. Try chat and social first for simple things
For a seat change, a name correction, or a quick question, the airline’s app or website live chat is often faster than the phone. Verified airline accounts on X and Facebook Messenger can also be quick — but only use official, verified accounts.
6. Have everything ready before you dial
Keep your six-character booking reference, the name on the booking, and your loyalty number in front of you. A prepared caller gets through a call far faster than one hunting for details mid-conversation.
7. If you are at the airport, use the desk
During cancellations and delays, the in-person service desk or a gate agent can often rebook you faster than the phone queue — and you can do both at once: join the phone call-back queue while you stand in the desk line.
One safety note
Only ever dial a number you confirmed on the airline’s own website or this directory. Numbers from paid search ads are a common scam. A real airline never charges a fee just to connect your call.
